The Birth of Electronic Computing (1940s)

ENIAC: The First Electronic Computer (1945)

The Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) was the world's first general-purpose electronic digital computer. Created at the University of Pennsylvania by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert, it was a monster by today's standards:

The Stored-Program Concept (1940s-1950s)

Von Neumann Architecture

John von Neumann proposed a revolutionary idea: store both programs and data in the computer's memory. This stored-program concept is the foundation of almost all modern computers.

In 1947, Bell Labs invented the transistor. This tiny device could do everything a vacuum tube could do, but was:

IBM System/360 (1964)

IBM's System/360 was revolutionary because it was a family of compatible computers. Programs written for one model would run on any other model in the series - a concept we take for granted today.

Intel co-founder Gordon Moore observed that the number of transistors on a chip doubled approximately every two years. This prediction, known as Moore's Law, has held true for over 50 years.
